Located right in the heart of Paris, in the prestigious setting provided by the Hôtel National des Invalides created by Louis XIV to house veterans and wounded soldiers, the Musée de l’Armée contains one of the world’s most important collections of military history and art, and offers a detailed look at the history of France. With over 1.1 million visitors in 2022 (of which 400,000 were young people under the age of 26), it ranks amongst the 10 most visited French museums. Containing around 500,000 items, the Museum’s collections cover the period from Prehistory to the Second World War, via a completely renovated educational itinerary: the weapons and armour of the French kings, cannons, uniforms, works of art, historical memorabilia of monarchs and leading military figures such as Francis I, Louis XIV, Charles de Gaulle, etc. and the Dôme des Invalides with its gilded cupola that culminates over 110 metres above Paris, that has housed Napoleon I’s monumental tomb since 1861.
