Meet Jacques Ferrandez during a two hours conference
Saturday June 16 Auditorium Austerlitz. From 2:00 p;m; to 4:00 p.m From history to fiction : presenting Jacques Ferrandez and his Carnets d’Orient
French cartoonist Jacques Ferrandez will present his ten volumes comic-book series Carnets d’Orient, in which he depicts the history of the French conquest of Algeria, from the 1830’s to the Algerian Independence in July 1962. The first volume was published in 1987. Since then, he has dedicated 25 years to this epic saga. A saga largely inspired from his own family history, historical sources and his own imaginative narratives. He will answer questions on the connection between history and fiction and explain how he recreated French Algeria as a virtual place of memory.
Young visitors’ activity
Young visitors’ itinerary.
A Special Young visitors’ itinerary starts at the main gate of the Hôtel des Invalides with the presentation of guns used during the conquest of Algeria during the nineteenth century. Ten didactic panels complete this itinerary.
In the Cour d’Honneur a ground game is organized around « mystery objects ». Their signification will be found in the exhibition Algeria 1830-1962. Featuring Jacques Ferrandez.
All along the exhibition, the characters created by Jacques Ferrandez all along the exhibition will provide you substantive explanations on models, uniforms, arms, paintings and photographs of this historical period.
Short vocabulary lessons will provide a great opportunity to enrich your knowledge on links between French and Arab languages with terms and expressions, many of them still in use today, brought back to France by the French soldiers who had served in the Army of Africa.
