Exhibition catalogue

Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène. La conquête de la mémoire
The exhibition catalogue published by Editions Gallimard is on sale at the museum’s library.

On 18 June 1815, the Battle of Waterloo sounded the death knell of the French Empire. The defeated Napoleon was exiled. Great Britain decided on the Emperor’s last residence: St Helena, a small island bristling with jagged contours in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Napoleon disembarked on the island with his most faithful companions and settled at Longwood House, a modest residence to say the least, where he would end his days in 1821.
The catalogue is dedicated to the special exhibition Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène organized by the musée de l’Armée that presents, for the first time in France, pieces of furniture from Longwood House, recently restored under the direction of the Musée National des Châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau, the property & logistics department and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development. The catalogue is structured in two sections. The first section consists of fourteen essays written by specialists about the everyday life of the defeated emperor. The second section presents the various rooms of Longwood House through artefacts, furniture and objects.
