The musée de l’Armée proposes an encounter with Vietnamese-French illustrator, painter, and graphic novelist Marcelino Truong. Marcelino Truong was born in Manilla in 1957 to a Vietnamese father and French mother. Viet Nam is at the center of his outstanding artistic production as he sees himself as a passeur between Western and Asian cultures, more specifically between France and Viet Nam. In his novel Une si jolie petite guerre – Saigon 1961-63 (A Nice Little War, Sài Gòn 1961-63) published by Denoël Graphic in 2012, Marcelino Truong analyses the beginning of America’s active war in Viet Nam which he witnessed in Saigon as a child. In May 2013, the Vietnamese-French novelist travelled to North Viet Nam to follow the steps of the soldiers serving with the Việt Minh who took part in First War of Indochina. His recollections will soon be published in a new graphic novel entitled Herbe verte ou poitrine rouge, in which he explores the complexity of national-communism in Viet Nam from 1945 to 1956.
