Making images
Printed handkerchiefs are principally a blank canvas for images, drawing on and reinterpreting a famous iconography, namely that driven by large-scale history painting.
The images depicting the military world belong to different registers, representing the sovereign’s heroism, society’s militarisation, or the nation’s military prowess, and are all carrying a political message.
Reworking and adapting formulae already firmly rooted in visual culture, and transmitting them via different media, from painting to photography, engraving to ornamented handkerchiefs, made it possible to disseminate these images and their message throughout all strata of society.
