Images of the son of Napoleon III, heir of the Second Empire, were widely disseminated, thanks to photography and the potential for reproduction offered by lithography.
His birth, baptism, leisure pursuits, were all opportunities for creating action portraits of the young prince.
Admitted into the 1st Grenadier Regiment of the Imperial Guard as a new-born, he followed a fast-track military education.
Images of the Imperial Prince in his uniform were produced in close succession over a period of some twenty years on various backgrounds: newspapers, statuettes and… handkerchiefs.
