Avec armes et bagages... Dans un mouchoir de poche
This is the story of the "square" in the broader sense of the term. From the eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth, the printed square cloth cut across borders between Army life and civilian society, bouncing from one to the other as dictated by fashion and events. This square of cloth is the very essence of the Hermès scarf or "carré" which stands as one of the greatest symbol of French chic. The end of conscription and downsizing of the military have gradually erased from our social psyche the rich and complex relationship between two apparently opposite universes. However, when we take the time to consider this artefact, it teaches us on the evolution of such relationships which traces can still be found in the context of our everyday life, in our everyday things and everyday spoken language.
